A lot of music therapists avoid picks. You don't need to use them all the time, however they are handy to have. In addition to your fingers, the pick can give you a wider range of timbres and volume. Typically, the pointy end of the pick strikes the strings, but try the round end and listen for the softer sound. Also try different thicknesses, a firmer pick will give a firmer sound.

Experiment with different types of picks. Thicker picks will give a firmer sound, softer picks tend to create a softer volume with a softer ‘attack’ to each note. Different types of plastic will also create different timbres E.g. the 0.88mm Nylon pick sounds different to the 0.88mm Tortex, even though they are made by the same brand.
