The One-Tune-Medley exercise has 3 distinct roles, however these roles don’t delineate until Step 3:

  1. Group Members

    • everyone in Steps 1 & 2

    • everyone except the leader and agitator from Step 3

  2. Leader - musically lead the ensemble

    • establishes the musical setting in Step 3

    • leads the musical negotiation in Step 4

  3. Agitator - provides a musical contribution that does not match

Step 1

  • Play the excerpt as written

  • Change 1 parameter to create a second version

  • Change a different parameter to create a third version

Step 2

  • Play as a medley

  • Version 1, 2, 3

Step 3

  • Agitator interjects with feature that does not match

  • Group try and match the new feature

Step 4

  • Leader musically negotiate with agitator and try to guide group back to original version or a common musical approach
